FAQ
Q. How does a teacher become Alabama’s Teacher of the Year?
A. Each winter, school districts across the state are allowed to
nominate one elementary and one secondary (middle and high school)
Teacher of the Year. From those, the state names 16 finalists (one
elementary and one middle/high school teacher from each of Alabama’s
eight districts). The Final Four is named, and then in May, the Teacher
of the Year is announced during a ceremony in Montgomery.
Q. What does it mean to be Alabama’s Teacher of the Year?
A. It is an honor to represent my colleagues from across the state. I
work with so many wonderful teachers at Dawes Intermediate, in Mobile
County Public Schools and across the state. The Alabama Teacher of the
Year serves as an ambassador for teachers for one school year. The
Teacher of the Year often travels to schools across the state to share
ideas about the profession and is nominated for National Teacher of the
Year.
Q. Why did you start this website?
A. Like many teachers, I am a working mom. While I am excited about
visiting schools across the state, I also wanted to create an
easy-to-access tool that any teacher can use to learn about my
classroom, my school and my philosophy of education. I also want to
learn from and hear from you, so please feel free to email me your thoughts. We are all in this profession together.
Q. If you had a quote that signifies your philosophy on life, what would it be?
A. “The two most important days of someone’s life are the day they are born and the day they decide what to do with their life.”
